Permanent residency in Hungary: how it really works
Let’s clear up the big myth first: permanent residency for €300,000 in government bonds, “in a couple of months, for life” — that hasn’t existed since 2017. The cost of getting this wrong is your money and your years.
Real PR in Hungary is the National Residence Card, and the path to it is transparent: 3 years of continuous legal residence on a permit — work, business, or family. To apply, you’ll need a certificate for the Hungarian cultural-knowledge exam, proven housing and means, full health insurance, and a clean record.
What you get: a card valid for 10 years, renewable for another 10, with a decision within 70 days. A stable status in an EU and Schengen country, with no more annual permit renewals. One condition worth knowing upfront: you genuinely have to live in Hungary — more than 6 months abroad can cost you the status.
There’s no investment shortcut to PR today — not for €300,000, not for any amount. What does work, especially for CIS nationals, is legal qualified employment: a real contract, real salary, real contributions, and every month counts toward those 3 years. Your family travels the route with you.
One more thing worth knowing: our lawyers know every valid route to Hungarian PR and citizenship — including the rare grounds that few know how to work with. Sometimes your particular situation opens one that meaningfully shortens the timeline. Check with our specialists — it might be your case.
